October 30th Game Recaps

By Mark Raup – AFC Beat Reporter

Kearsarge (1-1-1) v. Emmentaler (1-1-1)

The first game of the evening pitted two teams with identical records against each other. Kearsarge’s previous game ended in a tie with IBK Vikingarna the week before. Emmentaler was coming off an upset loss to the last place Cobra Kai Floorball Club.

After several close scoring chances in the early going from Emmentaler, they struck paydirt when Mazyar “Mazzy” Razzaz took a pass from Captain Peter Bagdasarianz and whipped a shot past Kearsarge goalie Tim Dennis. Emmentaler tallied a second goal six minutes later when Peter scooped up Luke Hickey’s shot wide of the net and scored on a wrap around, and netted a third two minutes after that when Mazzy forced a turnover in front of the Kearsarge net and fired the ball home. Emmentaler pushed the lead to four with four minutes remaining in the first half when Luke fired a wicked wrist shot to the top shelf on a nice head-man feed from Mazzy. Kearsarge Captain Andrew Pressley finished the first half scoring with a running cross-body shot from fifteen feet out.

Less than two minutes in to the second period, Emmentaler struck again. Mazzy found Peter uncovered in front of the net for an easy one-timer, making the score 5-1. Emmentaler’s Robert Kleinman was deep in the corner behind net on the left side four minutes later when he spotted an uncovered Micaela Englund a few feet outside the goalie crease. Her quick one-time goal made the score 6-1. Robert scored a goal of his own three minutes later, slapping home a bouncing ball in front of the crease. Initially it appeared that the ball had been kicked to him by another Emmentaler player, but after the officials discussed it, it was decided that there was no intentional kick and the goal stood, 7-1 Emmentaler. Andrew struck back for Kearsarge a minute later, ripping a free hit by boards twenty plus feet out past Emmentaler goalie Lee Payne to make the score 7-2. Emmentaler pushed the lead back to six less than a minute later when Luke flipped a shot through a pair of Kearsarge defenders and past a screened Tim. Kearsarge pulled back to within five three minutes later when Kearsarge forward Chris Edge took a pretty feed in front of the Emmentaler net from Tyler Morrison. Lee initially made the save on Edge’s shot, but the ball managed to get past him after an unusual bounce. Robert tallied again for Emmentaler a few minutes later, taking a lead pass up the right boards for Bobby Nodea and outracing everyone to the net. Emmentaler tallied one more time with a minute left when Micaela spied Luke all alone in front of the Kearsarge net. After a nifty pull back and shoot move, the cherry was placed atop the Emmentaler victory, 10-3.

IBK Vikingarna (1-0-2) v. Cobra Kai (1-2)

The second game of the evening saw the top team in the league facing off versus the bottom team in the league. The Vikings were coming off a tough last-minute tie against Kearsarge. Cobra Kai’s previous game saw them pull off their first win of the season against Emmentaler.

The Vikings tallied quickly in the first half when Rasmus Wendt found Russell Seig uncovered in the slot just over a minute in. The action was back and forth for most of the first half, with both Vikingarna goalie Bryan Ponder and Cobra Kai goalie Brandee Gomez coming up big to keep the game close. Eric Hickey was called for high sticking around the six-minute mark, but Cobra Kai killed off the penalty without incident. Just after the penalty expired, Cobra Kai forward RJ Little snuck past the Viking defense and caught up to a long lob pass from Mark Raup. He flipped the shot on net one handed across his body, and beat Bryan high to the far side for a spectacular goal to tie the game at one. With two and a half minutes left in the half, Cobra Kai defender Dustin “Ducky” Johnson tallied his first goal of the season after taking a cross-pass from Adnan Raja. Ducky fired a tailing shot from the point through heavy traffic to give Cobra Kai their first lead of the night, 2-1.

Cobra Kai pushed their lead to two goals early in the second half when Sam Elick found Adnan with a nice cross-pass in front of the Viking net three minutes in. The Vikings pulled back within one two minutes later when Jeff Morris fired a pass to Viking point-leader Erik Rune, making the score 3-2. Despite numerous bad passes, turnovers, and shoddy defense, Brandee kept Cobra Kai in the game with save after save until just under eight minutes left in the game when Rasmus found Russell for the second time, and the game was tied at three. Fifteen seconds later, the Cobra Kai defense fell flat again as Rasmus scored a goal of his own, taking the feed from Erik and slipping it past Brandee. IBK Vikingarna didn’t look back once they took the lead, as Erick scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart, the first on a nice lead-pass from Russell, and the other on a loose ball in front of the net he whacked home.

Emmentaler (1-0-1) v. Cobra Kai (0-2)

The first game of the evening saw one of the teams tied for first place taking on the team in the bottom of the standings. Cobra Kai was desperate for a win after an 0-2 start. Emmentaler was looking to strengthen their grasp on first place in the Fall League.

Both teams saw flurries of activity in front of the net early, but neither could cash in. Emmentaler had a chance to take the lead half way through the first when Joe Guzman was sent off for Incorrect Distance on a free hit, but failed to capitalize on the man advantage. Rookie Sam Elick tucked home a perfect feed from RJ Little to give Cobra Kai the lead late in the first. Talented Emmentaler forward Micaela Englund had a fantastic scoring chance a few minutes later, slipping past the Cobra Kai defenders and rifling a shot from just outside the goalie box, but Cobra Kai Goalie Brandee Gomez managed to get her helmet in front of it and deflect it away.

Emmentaler Captain Peter Bagdasarianz struck back early in the second to knot the game at one, firing a shot through traffic that deflected off a defender and past Brandee on the far side. Cobra Kai had to weather another powerplay a few minutes later when Eric Hickey was called for High Sticking and sent to the box for 2 minutes, but they killed off the penalty and tallied another goal of their own less than a minute later when RJ Little broke loose on a lead pass from Mark Raup. Emmentaler goalie Lee Payne initially stopped the shot, but it trickled under under his outstretched leg and rolled across the goal line to give Cobra Kai a 2-1 lead.

Cobra Kai weathered an offensive firestorm from the Emmentaler offense for the next few minutes, but Brandee was up to the task, fighting off numerous scoring chances to stonewall the Emmentaler offense. Cobra Kai Forward Norman Tran was also crucial down the stretch, using a stifling forecheck and numerous steals along the boards to disrupt the Emmentaler attack. With eight minutes left, Adnan Raja whipped a shot past the Emmentaler defense and goalie to push the Cobra Kai lead to 3-1. Seven minutes later, Adnan connected again, this time on a nice feed from Sam on a two on one to push the Cobra Kai lead to 4-1. Sam Elick iced the game with less than ten seconds left on a nifty lead pass from Adnan to make it 5-1, sealing the victory for Cobra Kai.

Kearsarge (1-1) v. IBK Vikingarna (1-0-1)

The second game of the night turned in to a battle for first place in the Fall League at the halfway point of the season. Kearsarge, fresh off their first victory of the season the week before, looked to continue their winning ways. IBK Vikingarna was looking to expand on their half-game lead over Kearsarge and take a full game lead over the rest of the field of play after tying Emmentaler last week in both their game and the standings.

The Vikings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Erik Rune beat Kearsarge goalie Tim Dennis on a nice feed from Jeff Morris less than two minutes in to the game. They had several more scoring chances early, but couldn’t capitalize. Midway though the half, Tyler Morrison was sent to the penalty box for heading the ball. Russell Seig buried the quick pass from Jeff Morris on the ensuing free hit and IBK Vikingarna had a 2-0 lead. Vikingarna continued to apply offensive pressure, but the Kearsarge defense buckled down and didn’t allow any further goals through the half.

Eight minutes into the second half, Kevin Hansel took a pass from Erik Rune down the right boards and snapped a wrister past Tim, giving Vikingarna a 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, Chris Edge fired a pass from just past the center line to an open David Smith in front of the net for the first Kearsarge tally of the night. David’s nifty move to beat Vikingarna goalie Bryan Ponder energized the previously somber Kearsarge bench.

IBK Vikingarna spent the next several minutes on the attack, but Kearsarge, led by defenseman David Friedman, continually stonewalled the Viking pass attempts and rushes. With a little more than four minutes left in the game, Kearsarge Captain Andrew Pressley was in the right place at the right time when a turnover in the corner came right to his stick along the left boards. He turned and blistered a shot past Ponder to cut the Vikingarna lead to one.

With a little under two minutes remaining in the game and Kearsarge desperately looking for the equalizer, Chris “Shooter” Holderrieth fired a long lob pass down the middle of the court to a streaking Tyler Morrison as he crashed the net. Tyler redirected the long pass past Ponder to even the score at 3-3. Despite several good scoring chances in the last minute on both sides, neither team could muster another goal and the game ended in a tie.
